Charging Cost Calculator

See what it costs to charge an electric vehicle at home, at a public Level 2 charger or at a DC fast charger — and how that compares with a gasoline car.

Starting prices are national averages as of September 2026 — change them to match your own rates. Estimates only: your rates, charging losses, weather and driving style all change real costs.

How the cost is worked out

  • You pay for the electricity that leaves the meter, not just what reaches the battery, so the calculator adds charging losses (about 10% on AC, 5% on DC fast).
  • Cost per mile uses the vehicle's EPA energy use (kWh per 100 miles) when we have it, otherwise it is worked out from battery size and range.
  • The gasoline comparison is 100 miles divided by the car's mpg, times the price of a gallon. Use your local prices — they vary a lot by state and change often.
  • Charging mostly at DC fast chargers can cost as much per mile as a gasoline car; charging at home is usually far cheaper.
